Windows HotStart isn’t a new technology, Windows HotStart functionality has been around in keyboard and mouse buttons for years, but the Windows HotStart feature is new. So what does Windows HotStart and what do Windows HotStart buttons do?

Windows HotStart buttons are buttons on your keyboard, mouse or other peripherals that can be configured to launch an application or perform a specific action. Windows HotStart is the feature in Windows that allows you to configure these buttons without the need to install 3rd party software. Windows Hotstart is included in Windows Vista, 7 and I believe Windows 8 and Windows XP.

Windows HotStart was introduced with Windows Vista. It is not available for Windows XP or earlier versions.

Readers may be interested to know that the lineage of Windows HotStart, like most of the mobile features introduced in Windows Vista, can be traced back to ‘pre-reset’ Windows Vista, otherwise known as “Longhorn.” Microsoft stated that a “Longhorn” Mobile PC would be media-ready by providing direct (appliance like) access to media so that the PC could be used as a DVD player, music player, or a photo viewer.
