Sometimes you are unable to merge cells in a Microsoft Word 2010 table or the option can be greyed out. If you are unable to merge cells in Word 2010 (perhaps because it’s greyed out), it may be because:
- Your cells don’t line up properly (noticable only in the print preview). To elaborate, you may find that you are trying to merge a single cell with two merged cells or cell that has been split
- Alternatively, if you are unable to merge cells it may be because you are using a trial version of Word 2010 that came with your computer
- Your worksheet may be protected
- You are trying to merge cells that are part of a table – Select the cells are unable to merge, click the Table Tools tab in the ribbon, in the Design section click Convert to Range and try to merge the cells again
- Check that the worksheet is not set to shared access on the Track changes isn’t turned on, as sometimes these can prevent you from merging cells
