When you add a USB removable drive to a VM in VMware Workstation, you get this message:

The device “USB Flash Drive” was unable to connect to its ideal host controller. An attempt will be made to connect this device to the best available host controller. This might result in undefined behaviour for this device.

Basically this is because you are trying to connect a USB 3 device through a USB 3 port to VMware Workstation’s USB 2 port (USB 2 is all that VMware Workstation 9 supports).

you can fix this by connecting the USB to a USB 2 port on the computer, or see if an upgraded version of VMware Workstation enables USB 3 support. You may also be able to just ignore the issue.

You can also edit the VM settings, select USB controller and enable USB 3 from the dropdown next to USB compatibility.
