WSUS Configuration – Port 80 / 443 Vs 8530 / 8531

When installing WSUS, the default is to install WSUS on the default IIS website over port 80 / 443. The default is actually wrong, best practice when installing any website is not to install it to the default IIS website, it will run better, faster and easier to troubleshoot other issues if WSUS is installed as it’s own website.

Therefore, when choosing between installing WSUS as part of the default instance over port 80 / 443 vs installing WSUS to use ports 8530 and 8531, choose the latter.
