My Windows 7 PC crashes on startup when it reaches the logo screen. It just freezes at the logo screen, how can I fix this?

Are you able to boot up in safe mode? (hold F8 on startup)

Yes, it boots past the logo screen in safe mode, but crashes without safe mode.

This means the system files are not corrupt and you don’t have a hardware problem.

Do you have System Protection set up? If so, can you do a System Restore?

OK. When Windows 7 crashes on startup at the logo, this usually means that there is an incorrect driver or a Windows Update that broke it. In rare occassions this can be caused by a virus.

If you did any updates to drivers or Windows recently, boot into safe mode and revert them. If this is not the case, you may have a hardware failure occurring when the hardware uses a particular function invoked or accessible by the driver. In which case you will have to try swapping hardware… But before you get to this, ensure you have exhausted your other options, including rebuilding Windows 7.

Thanks, it seems that Windows 7 crashing on the startup logo screen was caused by an update to my graphics card driver. I booted to save mode and reverted the driver – everything works fine now 🙂
