You get this error in the event log even though Shadow Copies is turned off:
The shadow copies of colume C: were aborted because th shadow copy storage could nto grow due to a user imposed limit.
\\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1
{binary value}
Event ID: 36
Source: volsnap
This error typically occurs even thought shadow copies is turn off and after installing software or Windows Updates. It happens because the shadow copy service is used when creating a system restore point and there is a user imposed limit on the amount of space allowed for system retore points, preventing it from growing.
To fix this, navigate to Control Panel -> System and click Advanced System Settings on the left. Then click on the System Protection tab and click Configure. From here, either increase the disk space usage allowed for system restore points (this is the user imposed limit that event 36 refers to), or turn off system protection.
