When trying to install IE 11, you get this error:

Setup can’t continue because a more recent version of internet explorer is installed

This happens if you have installed IE 11, then uninstalled it and tried to install IE 11 from the internet. It happens because the previous version of Internet Explorer that was installed would have auto-updated itself to the latest version of IE 11 (IE 11.x) and the installer you downloaded is trying to install an older minor version (IE 11.y, where y is less than x). Although you’ve already uninstalled the more recent version of IE 11, it doesn’t properly get removed – in fact you can prove this by going to Add / Remove Windows Features in the Control Panel and seeing that despite uninstalling IE 11, it’s still an option to enable as a Windows Feature, instead of reverting back to IE 8.

To fix this, you need to either somehow uninstall the previous (and newer) version of IE 11 completely (I don’t know how to do this) or install IE 11 by using Add / Remove Windows Features in the Control Panel.

If anyone works out how to completely remove the newer version of IE 11, please let me know!
