If you are running ESXi without vCenter, you must update your ESXi hosts without VMware Update Manager. To update an ESXi host without Update Manager:

    1. Download the patch
    2. Enable SSH on the ESXi host you want to update
    3. Open the VMware vSphere Client and connect to the ESXi host
    4. Right click the host and enter maintenance mode (migrate all the VMs off the host or power them down)
    5. Either use SCP or browse the datastore in the VMware vSphere Client to upload the patch to a local datastore (disk) on the host
    6. SSH to the ESXi host you want to update
    7. Run the following command on the host:

      esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/< >/< >.zip

The host should then say The update completed successfully, at this point you should then reboot the host from the VMware vSphere Client (Right click the host and reboot).

Your ESXi host has now been updated without having to use the VMware Update Manager 🙂
